In the March 2014 issue of Consumer Reports, the venerated magazine analyzes and rates mattresses in their feature article, “Pick the best mattress”.

“Where Consumer Reports fails spectacularly is in assessing only conventional mattresses,” says Chris   Chamberlin, co-founder of The Clean Bedroom. “The sleep industry’s dirty little secret is that conventional mattresses are made of toxic flame retardants, oil, polyester, polyurethane foam, and a host of harmful chemicals. So the ‘best’ of this bunch is really the best of the worst...Consumer Reports looked at important-to-sleep qualities like durability and resistance to bounciness,” she says.  “But they didn’t take into account important-to-health qualities like construction materials and  off-gassing. As much as I respect Consumer Reports—and I really do—their mattress ratings should leave you sleepless.”

Portlandshowroom 1It is recommended that adults get eight hours of sleep each night, which means getting prolonged and very intimate exposure to whatever is in and on a mattress.

Due to consumer demand for non-toxic options, scores of organic and all-natural mattresses are now available and from many different manufacturers. The Clean Bedroom carries only mattresses that are constructed using renewable, all-natural materials without additions like chemical flame retardants.
