You have decided you want to buy the best organic mattress. Now what?
As more people have become focused on their health, they have realized the importance of getting high-quality sleep each night and how critical sleep is to achieve optimal health. These people have attempted to muddle through the multitude of information – both good and bad- about what kind of natural mattress they should buy. Many of them have decided they want to purchase an organic mattress. In particular, they would like a mattress free of harmful chemicals and toxins found in most "traditional" and "bed in a box" brands. Our mattress guide is here to help.
What is the best organic mattress?
It’s a question we hear all of the time. The honest answer is that there is no clear winner. It can be frustrating trying to weed through all the companies who claim to have the best organic mattress. The truth is that only a few are actually selling a completely organic mattress. The internet is awash in all sorts of entities trying to jump in the ring and get a piece of this ever-growing section of the mattress industry. Unfortunately, many are involved in some form of greenwashing.
What is greenwashing?
Simply put, it is the attempt to incorporate minor organic elements in their product and then use those elements to justify calling the whole product organic. For instance, they might say that their mattress has an organic cotton cover, which makes it healthier for you, but then include only a vague reference to what is actually inside the mattress. However, they conveniently fail to mention the polyurethane foams and the chemical flame retardants that are not organic or natural and are not healthy for you at all. Therefore, when going out to shop for an organic mattress, you want to consider a few important factors.
First and foremost, you must verify that you are dealing with a reputable brand. There are gold-standard certifications such as GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) that all reputable organic mattress brands should have verifying the authenticity of their components. (Beware of other certifications that might look legitimate but are not what they appear to be on the surface.) Second, it is of utmost importance to find a mattress that meets you and your sleep partner’s needs. In other words: comfort, support, and customization are important so you can ensure many years of healthy, deep sleep.

Best Organic Latex Mattress – Obasan Studio 12"
At the top of the list for organic latex mattresses is Obasan. Obasan is a family-owned business based in Ottawa, Canada, that’s been running for over 35 years. Obasan’s mattresses are constructed with the finest certified organic materials: GOTS-certified cotton and wool and GOLS-certified latex. They offer several different models to choose from in a variety of price ranges. What separates Obasan from everybody else is not only the impeccable quality of the materials they use but their ability to customize each side of the mattress independently. This allows each person to meet all their comfort and support needs, even if both partners totally disagree on how they want their ideal mattress to feel.
Layers of an Obasan Organic Mattress
An Obasan mattress is broken down into three very distinct layers:
- The top layer serves as a contouring and pressure-relieving layer designed to allow for better blood flow and less tossing and turning. This allows you to get a deeper, more restful sleep.
- The center layer is truly unique. On either side of a queen or king mattress, there are 3 individual "squares" of latex, each a different firmness. They can also be put in any order you choose at the shoulders, lumbar, and foot sections of the mattress.
- The bottom layers are rectangular in shape and are available in a medium and firm option that allows you to control the mattress’ overall firmness on either side.
These three distinct layers come encased in a beautiful organic cotton cover, filled with organic wool. This cover unzips to allow for easy rearrangement of the layers to suit each individual sleeper’s needs. The organic cotton and wool are very breathable. In particular, the wool allows for the free circulation of air, is effective at wicking moisture away from your body, and serves as a natural flame retardant. This eliminates the need for any harmful chemical flame retardants. For the best Obasan mattress overall, we chose the Studio 12" model. This is their best selling model, offering a truly luxurious and supportive feel that allows you to determine the overall feel you think is best for you and your sleep needs. Obasan also offers a 10" version called the Studio 10" if you prefer a slightly firmer feel overall.

Best Organic Innerspring Mattress (Latex-Free) – Royal Pedic Organic Cotton Wool Wrapped
One of the best mattress brands (that many people are unfamiliar with) is Royal Pedic. Royal Pedic is a California based company that has been family-owned and operated since 1943. They manufacture some of the highest quality completely organic innerspring mattresses in the world, which have been the premier choice for many Los Angeles interior design firms, and, in turn, for many of Hollywood’s most recognizable film actors and actresses – and six United States presidents! You can read more of the Royal Pedic story HERE. The Royal Pedic Organic Cotton and Wool Wrapped mattress is an excellent choice for anyone who prefers an innerspring mattress’s feel and wants a clean and healthy version.
This model features a traditional Bonnell coil system that is wrapped with certified organic wool and long-staple cotton. The cover of the mattress is a certified organic cotton canvas filled with certified organic wool from France. If you prefer a slightly firmer feeling mattress, then this is a fantastic choice for you. Mattresses are hand-tufted for durability and quality. If you prefer a slightly more contouring feel, we recommend upgrading to the Premier Organic Cotton and Wool Wrap. This model features a higher coil count unit with a more forgiving feel but still offers great support. The cover is a beautifully upgraded organic cotton filled with a generous amount of organic wool. Either one of these Royal Pedic models is an excellent choice if you’re looking for high quality and comfortable organic innerspring mattress.
Best Natural Luxury Mattress – Vispring Sublime Superb
When it comes to an all-natural luxury mattress, there is one brand that stands at the top; Vispring. Founded in London in 1901, Vispring has been known for its impeccable quality, craftsmanship, and comfort. The Vispring factory is located in the wonderful seaside town of Plymouth, England, where every mattress is made to order by true artisans who have been trained for years in the art of crafting the finest mattresses on the market.
Vispring’s founder, James Marshall, is the inventor of the individually wrapped pocketed coil. This was invented as a means of limiting side-to-side motion transfer in the mattress. Today, Vispring manufactures these coils in their plant and utilizes virgin vanadium steel, known to be the strongest and most durable steel in the world. These coils are then wrapped with an array of natural fibers such as wool, cotton, horsetail, and even silk and cashmere in their top-of-the-line models. Each mattress is hand sewn, stitched, and tufted by highly trained craftsmen and is made to order individually. It was not easy to choose, but our favorite Vispring mattress is the Sublime Superb. The Sublime Superb features two rows of calico cotton wrapped pocketed vanadium steel coils wrapped with hand teased South American horsetail and blended with real Shetland fleece wool, silk, mohair, and organic cotton. We choose a medium tension coil as we prefer a slightly more enveloping feel, but Vispring does offer their coils in four different levels of firmness, Soft, Medium, Firm, and Extra Firm. They also offer the ability to do split tensions on any of their King size models.
We highly recommend purchasing the matching divan (boxspring) made to specifically accompany each mattress. Each divan features the same vanadium steel coils wrapped with wool and cotton. These divans are built like a high-quality piece of furniture and can be made with storage drawers if you have the need. Vispring offers a wide range of custom fabrics for both their divans and their full line of headboards. Each Vispring mattress comes with a full 30-year non-prorated guarantee. This is by far the best mattress warranty in the industry. If you are looking for the cream of the crop in an organic luxury mattress, Vispring has no peer, in our opinion.
Best Organic Hybrid Mattress – Naturepedic EOS
For those who want the comfort of latex and the support of coils, a hybrid mattress is the answer! The Naturepedic EOS mattress is a completely organic hybrid mattress that is customizable and supports Ergonomic Organic Sleep. The EOS mattress has two layers in one zippered compartment. On top, a 3″ comfort layer made of organic latex determines how the surface or top of your bed will feel. It is primarily responsible for pressure point relief and surface comfort. The 8″ bottom/support layer, made of encased coils, determines how deep you will sink into the bed and is primarily responsible for postural alignment and balance. This mattress is as beautiful as it is functional.
Made of premium organic fabrics with a European-inspired design, the EOS will offer a luxurious night’s sleep for years to come. All Naturepedic mattresses meet the organic and non-toxic standards of the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and/or the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). They are made with non-GMO materials and are formaldehyde-free.

Synthetic fibers and cotton grown with pesticides can be stuffy, not to mention hazardous to your health and environmentally damaging. An organic option is better for your child, the environment, and those who manufacture the mattress. It’s also important that the mattress is practical and worth the price for years to come. That’s why Naturepedic Crib Mattresses are such a great choice.
Naturepedic has several models with varying weights with a lightweight option to make changing bedding easy. You can also find a Naturepedic crib mattress with a firm side for your infant and a more plush side for your toddler. All of their mattresses are made with 100% organic cotton with no toxic flame retardants. Naturepedic mattresses are always a safe and healthy choice for your child. The cotton is grown organically without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or defoliants. Made of GOTS-certified organic cotton, Naturepedic crib mattresses are breathable, comfortable, and naturally fire retardant. They accomplish this all without the use of toxic chemicals. This makes them the perfect choice for parents.
Since you spend at least ⅓ of your life on your mattress, it only makes sense to be sure it is of the highest quality. We honestly feel that your mattress is the most important piece of furniture you buy for your home. The quality of your sleep is directly tied to your health and well being. All of our mattresses are of high-quality natural and organic materials – organic latex, cotton, and wool. These natural materials are more breathable and promote better airflow. This helps you have a cooler night of sleep. Research shows that sleeping cooler (between 60 and 67 degrees) promotes a deeper, more restful sleep, which will contribute to your good health.
